Why the studio opens at four

The farm is quiet, the licences are free, and a frame that fails at 4am can be fixed twice before a client is awake.

People assume the four o’clock start is an affectation. It is arithmetic.

A render that fails at 9am costs you the day: you find it at eleven, you re-queue at noon, and the fix lands after the client has already asked where the files are. The same failure at four in the morning costs you nothing at all. You are sitting right there, the farm is empty, and there is time to be wrong twice.

What a morning looks like

  • 04:00 — Overnight queue is checked frame by frame. Anything suspicious is re-queued first.
  • 05:30 — Look dev. This is the only quiet hour, so it goes to the work that needs silence.
  • 07:00 — Exports land. Files go out before the first email arrives.
  • 09:00 — Doors open. Meetings, briefs, revisions, coffee that somebody else makes.

By the time the day properly starts, the thing that could have ruined it has already been dealt with. Everything after nine is conversation.

The part that is an affectation

The bread. There is a bakery two doors down that opens at five, and once you have had a warm loaf at the top of a render check, a normal start time stops making sense.
